Response to the Scottish Government's budget
Today’s budget includes some positive steps for Scottish culture and creative industries, but more detail is needed to get a proper understanding of the Government’s plans for the sector.
Measures including a £10m investment in the screen sector and additional funding for Creative Scotland to cover a downturn in lottery receipts are welcome. Further detail on how other cultural spending will be distributed must now be provided.
The Government’s pledge of £600m to help achieve 100% broadband coverage for Scotland by 2021 is very welcome news for the creative sector. High-quality digital infrastructure will help creative businesses in fields from videogames to architecture to set up across the the country and spread growth and success as widely as possible.
The budget also introduced measures intended to increase the number of people in apprenticeships, boost innovation and develop a workforce ready for the jobs of tomorrow. Everything must be done to ensure the creative industries draw as much benefit from these investments as possible.
